 Humanities and Catholic Theology

At Tilburg University, the Humanities program focuses on being relevant to the world today. It is the study of human culture, identity and interactions within society. In covering this, the program tends to look at factors such as language, art and religion. Essentially, the main focus of this course is to examine how humans interact with one another and how society functions; humanities therefore enforces the University motto of "Understanding Society''. Unlike most Humanity courses where a historical approach is taken, the Tilburg course is far more contemporary. For example, there is a strong international aspect, as seen in terms of languages spoken, the student population and research. Thus, this program is extremely popular as it prepares you to work and live as part of our modern day society whilst exploring concepts within humanity that are often viewed as being old fashioned.

The Catholic Theology course also looks to modernise the traditional study of faith. The course analyses some of the main questions of life, such as God and humanity itself, whilst also teaching its students about the Christian faith and how it affects society today. It is linked to other subjects such as sociology, philosophy and pyschology which therefore makes it a broad course. This particular subject is taught in Dutch,  and in the first year you arre introduced to many projects which you then further develop your knowledge of in second and third year studies. Examples of topics include: Greek and Hebrew, the Bible and systematic philosophy. The school was founded in 2007, 1st January with the intention of guiding and instructing those who are looking to go into professions regarding questions and topics of faith. It is the only Catholic Theology school in the Netherlands to offer opportunity for practical work and has connections with simialr schools in the UK and in Ireland. It enhances your ability to think critically and for this reason the school is highly regarded.

About Us

On the 22nd of November 2016 a group of 8 Erasmus pupils from 4 different countries visited the Tilburg University. To start, we were given an explanation about the Dutch education system from our guide Anne. This helped us to properly understand the university and its level of eduction compared to other universities in the Netherlands. After being given some general information about Tilburg we were then able to visit their studio which had a green room that they use to film educational videos for their students to use. We were able to test out the green screen for ourselves which was a unique experience which was very

entertaining. From there we were taken on a campus tour by some of the students which was helpful as we could ask them directly about what it is like studying at Tilburg. The students were friendly and clearly passionate about their university.

We were all impressed by the campus which was American in style with lots of parks and had a vibrant atmosphere. After this, we participated in a lecture so we could experience  how students learn, thus giving us a good insight to the student experience.

Overall it was a very positive day and was very helpful in terms of our project.
